Double Earthquakes Shake Up Myanmar, China, And Thailand
At 13:55 GMT Thursday, dual earthquakes hit Burma, officially known as the Union of Myanmar. Near the border of China and Thailand, the two earthquakes happened almost simultaneously. The quakes were 4.8 and 6.8 on the Richter scale. These earthquakes were very shallow, however will not cause tsunamis. The Union of Myanmar had two major earthquakes on Thursday, centered a few miles outside Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district. The earthquakes were only about six miles deep. That is quite shallow. News sources in China and Thailand have reported the quake was felt in Bangkok and Hanoi. There weren’t several individuals living in the areas of the earthquake centers. States of death only happened to one person so far. This was due to the Thailand roof collapse.
Tsunami not likely
The ocean is very close to Myanmar. Nevertheless, it's unlikely that a tsunami can be created. The Pacific Tsunami Warning center issued a statement the quake is too far inland to warrant a tsunami warning. An earthquake has to center under the ocean, or be very close, to be able to create a tsunami. In the last four years, Myanmar has had two other major natural disasters before this. In 2008 and 2010, Myanmar was impacted by cyclones. Both of those disasters left hundreds of thousands either dead or homeless.
States extremely hard with communication lockdown
There have been lots of restrictions in Myanmar by the government in the last few months. This involved restrictions on external press services, voice-over telephone IP services and the Internet. This can be a huge communication lockdown. All first person reports of what is going on are very difficult to get. The country has not requested the help of aid agencies, however if they're allowed into the country, this communications lockdown could make offering assistance much more difficult. The country has tried to block Egypt and Libya uprisings by locking down communications. Anything the government does not own has been shut off by the government including internet cafes and outside phone services. There have been no discussions by the government on the lockdown of communications yet. Still, outside reporters will have to be let in or the government will need to explain a little bit better.
